On the Road With Nascar Road Atlas 2003: United States/Canada/ Mexico
Published in Paperback by Lawrence Group (September, 2002)
Average review score:

NASCAR fan's roadmap to fun!!
This atlas is pretty sweet. It's got all the track layouts, so detailed I can pick out my seats when I order tickets for the races. They also show parking areas and paddock/pit/garage areas inside the track. Also included are inset maps showing how to get to the WC tracks from nearby cities. For those of us who don't get to that many Winston Cup events, all local NASCAR sanctioned tracks are highlighted too! In addition to all this there are fully blown detailed maps showing all the states to help you plan your road trip to any event.
Other goodies include state populations, largest cities, land area, highest points, as well as mileage charts, and websites for all national parks and federal lands (for you hunters and outdoors people).

Overall this atlas contains a lot of info!

Jason Wolf

ps - Don't for get the trivia included like: Who earned the 400-mile event race record at Darlington in 1968? It's David Person, but buy the atlas for the rest of the questions ;)

Too bad it's out of print, I'd love a copy! I read this book 20 years ago and cannot find a copy. I highly reccommend it for it's intense mystery and the lure of a treasure hunt. Steeped in the early history of the desert southwest. It is an excellent read!

Great beauty
What an exquisite book! Not only is it an informative and interesting read, but it made me want to move to Taos and take up oil painting! In fact, I'm signing up for painting classes this week! The plates are magnificent, and the subject matter, Taos, and Taos Pueblo Indians, are filled with beauty and dignity from a time gone by. Highly recommended for all lovers of the Southwest, native cultures, and landscape and oil paintings.

Pablita Velarde/Painting Her People: Painting Her People
Published in Paperback by University of New Mexico Press (May, 2001)
Authors: Pablita Velarde, Marcella J. Ruch, and J. J. Brody
Average review score:

A "must" for students of Native American art history
Pablita Verlarde: Painting Her People is an impressive artbook that beautifully presents an historical and compelling memoir of the artist, enhanced with twenty-eight of her paintings in full color, including some previously unpublished and rarely seen. Biographer Marcella Ruch spent many hours with Pablita Verlarde recording her stories as first person reminiscences and includes anecdotes drawn from her Pueblo childhood, her mother's early death from TB, her experiences at St. Catharine's Indian School at age 5, her later years at the Santa Fe Indian School (working with Dorothy Dunn to develop her art), and painting murals at Bandelier under the WPA. There are personal reflections on the struggle to raise her children alone, and her eventual fame as an Native American painter. Here also are stories about the experiences of being a Native American woman in the 20s, 30s, and 40s, as well as being an artist able to triumph over many difficulties. Each story is illustrated with one of her paintings of Pueblo life, a photograph from her personal collection, or an historical photograph from the Museum of New Mexico photo archives. A "must" for students of Native American art history in general, and the work of Pablita Verlarde in particular, Pablita Velarde: Painting Her People is also available in paperback (0937206652, $18.95).

Painted Books from Mexico: Codices in Uk Collections and the World They Represent
Published in Hardcover by British Museum Pubns Ltd (January, 1996)
Author: Gordon Brotherston
Average review score:

The best way to learn about Ancient Mexico
This book contains a description and analysis of sixteenth and seventeenth century Mexican manuscripts. The best way to understand the life and way of thinking in ancient Mexico is through their own literature. Aztec scribes recorded the encounter of two worlds the way they experienced it. This book talks about what codices and other manuscripts reveal about life in Mexico before the conquest and about the transformation their world suffered at the arrival of the Spaniards. As the book states, it is extremely sad that of the thousands of books the pre-Hispanic scribes made, less than twenty have survived. This book reveals the magic the past of Mexico is filled with.
